Spotted Lanternflies Control
Spotted Lanternfly Identification and Treatment to the Central and Northern NJ Areas
If you see a spotted lanternfly, kill it! They’re brown and scab-like creatures that appear on any flat surface such as trees, fence posts, and rocks. Residents of New York and New Jersey are being urged to kill the spotted lanternfly and its eggs immediately.
If you find eggs in a mass, crush them with a scraper or an implement. Kill them by putting them in double bags of alcohol or hand sanitizer.
The destruction of spotted lanternfly eggs can help prevent the spread of their larvae. They can be laid on any surface such as fences, cars, trees, and metal objects. It’s important to inspect an area to prevent the spread of pests. Eggs with a 30 to 50 per egg mass are ideal for this purpose. The spotted lanternfly is not a threat to people or animals, but it can hurt local agriculture by consuming different vegetation.
“As the temperatures begin to warm, and more people are outside on their own properties, we are asking them to look for and destroy spotted lanternfly egg masses,” NJDA Secretary Douglas H. Fisher said in a statement.
The spotted lanternfly is an invasive pest native to China and Southeastern Asia that could threaten crops across the country, including those in New York and New Jersey.
